Mr. Sturgeon graduated with honors from the University of Southern Mississippi with a degree in biology.He lettered in song there and became a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He graduated from regulation school from Ole Miss in December of 1988, and become admitted to the Mississippi Bar in March of 1989. He has served as President of the Natchez Historical Society and at the Board of Directors of the Mississippi Historical Society and the Woodville Civic Club. He served a time period as Governor General of the Order of the First Families of Mississippi.
Holmes Sturgeon is married to Jeretta Hunter Sturgeon and is the father of sons, Walker Sturgeon and Lon Sturgeon. He attends Corinth Church of Christ and is a Mason.
